Orvieto

Umbria's Grand Hill Town

Today, Orvieto is a small town of about 21,000 inhabitants, but in the middle ages, it was an important city particularly because it was on the route between Venice and Rome. It was also of military importance because of its position high on a bluff.

The Duomo

Our group visited the Duomo, or cathedral, which is known for its beautiful Gothic façade with stained glass windows. Next to the Duomo is the clock tower which was built in 1347 for the workers building the cathedral.

Free Time in Orvieto

After that, the group dispersed to explore the town. We chose to visit the ceramic shops and grab a bite to eat with another couple. We found a tiny, warm cafe down a cobblestone street. The friendly young lady went out of her way to answer all of our questions before taking our order. We lingered over the hot lunch and good conversation. When we finally left the warm, cozy cafe, we were surprised to see that the town was closing up for its lunchtime. We strolled back up the cobblestone to our meeting place.
